livedvd.png LiveDVD

Epidemic GNU/Linux is distributed as a LiveDVD. Simply burn the downloaded .ISO file to a blank DVD, boot from it, and instantly enjoy the operating system! Computer hardware is automatically detected and configured, even while running Epidemic directly from the DVD. All the programs accompanying it (office suite, audio players, video games, web browsers, p2p applications, etc.) may be run directly from the DVD without installing the system on your computer’s hard drive.

 livependrive.png LivePendrive

If you prefer,  in just a few minutes you can create a LivePendrive version of Epidemic, which can be used in the same way as the LiveDVD. This includes the option to save (persistent data) any changes you make while using it.

easychannel.png Special Applications Installer

Epidemic uses Easy Channel, an exclusive web based application installer. With it the installation of programs such as Google Earth, Opera Browser, Alien Arena, Picasa, Skype, VirtualBox, Wine Doors, etc., can be accomplished with just a few mouse clicks.

 livependrive.png Modern Pleasing Look

Epidemic utilizes the latest in modern desktop environments, KDE 4 with Compiz Fusion. Even when running from the DVD this combination provides an easy, intutive and fun way to interact with the operating system. It also provides speed and utility, together with special effects that will leave you and your friends impressed!

Friday, 11 December 2009 00:00

The Epidemic Development Team is pleased to announce the launch of Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.1 Beta 3 (Codename: "Freedom").

Although the development of this new version of Epidemic is focused on bug fixes and polishing the system, there are some important changes that have been made such as a new boot option that allows you to start Epidemic from an ISO image on your HD. Improvements in the boot process makes it much cleaner, plus the elimination of text messaging and integration with the ESU Knotification (the KDE 4 reporting system) are also included.

Along with the changes implemented in Betas 1, 2 and 3, Epidemic 3.1 also includes the following updates making it the latest stable version.

1 – New boot parameter

Using the parameter “bootfrom=/partition/path” you can start Epidemic from an ISO image located anywhere on the HD without having to create a DVD. This is very handy for testing the system.

2 - ESU development

ESU is a new application created by Team Epidemic in the form of a PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module). It includes a module for Systemsettings (the KDE/Epidemic Unified Control Center), providing the system administrator greater freedom in choosing how other users must authenticate in order to perform actions that depend on administrative privileges.

3 - GRUB Legacy replaced with GRUB 2

Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.1 replaces GRUB Legacy with GRUB 2. This important change was made because the development of GRUB Legacy has been discontinued in favor of GRUB 2, leaving GRUB Legacy with only minor bug fixes being offered.

4 - Introducing support for Ext4

Beginning with Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.1, the ext4 file system is being adopted by default. Ext4 is a great improvement over Ext3, modifying important data structures to directly enhance computer performance and system reliability.

5 - New Kernel

Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.1 comes with Linux Kernel 2.6.30-2-686, optimized for i686 architecture, with support for Nvidia and ATI 3d drivers along with several new wireless cards.

6 - KDE 4.3 and Compiz Fusion (Running from the LiveDVD)

Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.1 offers the very latest in desktop environments, with KDE 4.3 (the newest version of this world class desktop) and Compiz Fusion now running directly from the LiveDVD. This combination provides an easy to use and fun way of interacting with the operating system while providing speed, incredible utility and stunning desktop effects.

7 - Improvements in eInstaller

We’ve made several improvements in eInstaller, with a focus on new options for installing GRUB.

8 - New graphical boot system (Plymouth)

We’ve replaced Bootsplash with Plymouth, allowing Epidemic to use the standard Debian kernel without needing to apply any patch, thereby greatly increasing compatibility with its parent distribution.

9 - New start up system

Launch of boot scripts dealing with dependencies and in parallel results in a significant reduction in boot time, especially with multi-core processors.

10 - Unification of boot options

Epidemic’s boot options for Nvidia and ATI video cards, including choosing the most appropriate drivers, are now automatically made by the system.

11 - Nvidia legacy driver support

Support for legacy nvidia drivers, 173.14.xx, 71.86.xx, 96.43.xx, and of course the latest driver, 190.42, comes pre-installed and configured, running directly from the LiveDVD.

12 - Internationalization

We’re beginning to add internationalization to the system, with the English translation done by Otto R. Heredia de Sá.

Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.0 now available
Sunday, 12 April 2009 11:21

The Epidemic Development Team is pleased to announce the release of Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.0 (codename: "Symbiotic Evolution"). This release brings important new features that the previous version lacked, and is an evolutionary development step in the progress of Epidemic Linux.

epidemic30.png

This new version is the first to use KDE 4, more specifically, KDE 4.2 (Codename: "The Answer") as its default desktop. It was with great effort that KDE 4 specific applications were ported to Epidemic, most of which are developed in C + + using KDE’s API, and some of which include Systemsettings in the unified KDE/Epidemic control center.

Easy Channel has been ported to KDE 4, and includes significant improvements. It now checks the integrity and authenticity of tasks downloaded from the internet, before any updates are made, contributing greatly to improving the security of the operating system. It also integrates with other installers, so if a particular program is installed, for example by Synaptic, it will also appear as installed in Easy Channel.

eNetwork,  was also ported to the KDE4 API, and has new features including initial support for softmodems.

ePendrive was developed from scratch by the Epidemic Team and includes a new module for system settings, allowing users to choose whether changes to Epidemic, running from a live pendrive, will be saved or discarded.

eInstaller has been ported to KDE 4 and was completely redesigned. New features include the option to create a live USB flash drive as well as keeping or discarding settings and changes made during a Live OS session. The option to change the default user name (epidemic) prior to installation is also included, as well as the option of installing the system in expert mode, allowing the choice of optional mount points (except for root and home).

eCommunity is an application designed to give credit to those who contribute in any way to the development of Epidemic Linux. It has been ported to KDE 4 and includes a progress bar that tracks updates.

ecommunity.jpg

We’ve compiled a new kernel for Epidemic GNU/Linux 3.0: Kernel 2.6.26-epd, optimized for i686 architecture, with the required Bootsplash patch, modified by the Epidemic Team. Updated 3d Nvidia and ATI support is included, together with support for various wireless cards such as rt200 Ralink, Atmel AT76C50x, Intel Pro Wireless 2100, Intel Pro Wireless 2200/2915, Atheros 521x, Broadcon BCM43x/Airport Extreme, prism54, TI ACX100/ACX111, Zydas, Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (used in the new Centrino), and Intel Pro/Wireless 3945.

We’ve also developed a new system startup for our LiveDVD and Live Pendrive, resulting in a drastic reduction in boot time options with ATI and Nvidia cards.

We’ve made big improvement in support for Bluetooth devices, modems and 3G wireless cards with Broadcom chipsets, and significant improvements in exorg, the Epidemic script responsible for configuring the X server.

This version of the Epidemic includes the migration of the Lenny repository resources for Squeeze, with the addition of several new programs like Digikam 0.10, kftpgrabber 0.8, SMPlayer 0.6, Audacity 1.3, Clamav 0.95, Amarok 2.0, OpenOffice 3.0, Iceweasel 3.0, and Compiz Fusion 0.7, which has been pre-configured to run straight from the LiveDVD.
